Do you need a license to braid hair in South Carolina?

Yes, but not a cosmetology license. South Carolina asks braiders to register with the Board of Barber Examiners: a $25 fee, a six-hour course on health and sanitation, and an online exam passed at 70%. No school hours, no practical exam.

Who needs to register

Anyone who braids for money in South Carolina, unless they already hold a barber or cosmetology license. The law defines hair braiding as weaving natural hair without cutting, coloring, relaxing or any chemical treatment, and it includes extensions. It doesn’t matter whether you braid in a salon, from home or at your clients’ places: the registration is yours, not a shop’s.

How to register, step by step

  1. Get your documents ready

A photo ID (driver’s license, state ID, passport or military ID), your Social Security card, and two forms from the board’s package: a notarized signature affidavit with a 2×2 passport-type photo, and a notarized verification of lawful presence. Bring both to a notary together.

  2. Apply online and pay $25

Fill in the hair braider application on the state’s eService portal (eservice.llr.sc.gov), upload your documents and pay the $25 registration fee. A confirmation email follows within 24 hours.

  3. Take the six-hour course

The board offers its own six-hour video course, or you can take one from a board-approved provider. It covers sanitation, scalp conditions, where you may braid and how to renew. Once the board has reviewed your application, it emails you a login for its course and the exam.

  4. Pass the online exam at 70%

Then you’re registered. If you took a provider’s course instead, upload its completion certificate to your application.

Finish within a year. An application is valid for one year from the day the board receives it; after that you apply again.

Renewing

A registration lasts two years, or until the end of the board’s two-year renewal cycle if that comes first, so your first one may be shorter. You renew by paying the renewal fee. A registration that has lapsed has its own reinstatement form on the board’s site.

Questions braiders ask

Can I braid at a park or the beach?

Not with extensions. South Carolina’s definition of hair braiding includes extensions except in public places such as beaches, parks and sidewalks.

Do my tools need anything special?

Yes. Everything you use must be disposable, or disinfected with a hospital-grade or EPA-approved disinfectant.

Can I do color or a relaxer with this registration?

No. Cutting, coloring, relaxing and other chemical services need a barber or cosmetology license, which takes 1,500 hours or more of training.

I braid in another state. Does my license carry over?

South Carolina’s reciprocity rules are written for barbers. Ask the board before you move: BoardInfo@llr.sc.gov or (803) 896-4588.

Do I need anything else to braid from home?

Possibly a business license from your city or county, and their rules for working from home. The board registers you; local rules cover where you work.

Braid. HAUSBRAID handles the rest.

Once you’re registered, clients will ask your prices, call while you’re mid-braid and DM at midnight. HAUSBRAID gives you a menu page with deposits, answers the calls you can’t take and writes up every DM as a booking for your tap.
