Guides · for braiders

Do you need a license to braid hair in Ohio?

Yes, but not a cosmetology license. Ohio asks braiders for a boutique services registration in braiding from the State Cosmetology and Barber Board: free, online, with no school hours and no exam. The catch is where you braid: always inside a licensed salon.

Who needs to register

Anyone who braids clients in Ohio, paid or free, without a cosmetologist or natural hair stylist license. Ohio law defines braiding as intertwining hair into patterns, and it includes twisting, locking, beading, crocheting and wrapping, and adding length or bulk with human or synthetic hair. It doesn’t include tape, keratin or fusion bonds, color or chemicals, or cutting, except to finish the ends of synthetic hair.

How to register, step by step

  1. Check you qualify

You must be at least 16. There is no course to take and no exam to pass first, and the registration costs nothing.

  2. Make an eLicense account

Ohio’s licensing portal is elicense.ohio.gov. Sign in if you already have an account, or create one.

  3. Apply for a Boutique Service Registration

On your eLicense dashboard choose Apply for a New License, pick the Cosmetology and Barber Board, then Boutique Service Registration and the General application. Fill in your name, address and date of birth, and upload a government ID such as a driver’s license, military ID or passport.

  4. Get it by email

Once the board approves it, your registration arrives as an email attachment. It’s valid until the expiration date printed on it.

Where you can braid

The registration lets you braid only inside a salon whose license is current and covers braiding. That can be someone else’s salon, or a boutique salon you license yourself: a registration holder can run one. The law asks a salon for running hot and cold water and drainage, a way to disinfect your tools, a clean, ventilated room, and the board’s notice for reporting violations on the wall.

From home. A salon can be in your home if it has its own entrance from outside, solid doors to the living space kept shut during business hours, and a restroom separate from the living quarters. The application needs a floor plan drawn to scale and approval from your local zoning office.

On the road. A motor home, trailer or other recreational vehicle can be a licensed mobile salon, with a working sink, and you report where and when it operates to the board before you serve clients. Braiding in a client’s own home isn’t covered: the registration works inside a licensed salon.

Renewing

Every registration expires on January 31 of each odd-numbered year, whenever you got it. For the cycle ending January 31, 2027, renewal takes four hours of continuing education by January 15, 2027: one hour on the board’s laws and rules, taken from the board, and three hours of infection control and safety. If this is your first Ohio registration, you don’t need those hours for the 2027 renewal, and registrants 65 or older before October 2, 2026 are exempt too.

Questions braiders ask

Can I wash my clients’ hair too?

Shampooing is its own boutique registration. You can hold more than one: apply for braiding and shampooing separately.

Can I do tape-ins, bonded extensions or color?

Not with this registration. Bonding, fusion, cutting and chemical services need a natural hair stylist license (no chemicals) or a cosmetologist license.

I only braid a relative who lives with me. Do I need it?

No. Ohio law lets you braid without a registration for free, at home, for a family member who lives in the same household.

I braided in another state. Does that count?

It can. The board issues the registration to someone who holds a braiding license or registration from another state, or who has satisfactory work experience or a certification from a state that doesn’t issue one.

Braid. HAUSBRAID handles the rest.

Once you’re registered, the questions start: prices, calls mid-braid, DMs at midnight. HAUSBRAID answers with a menu page that takes deposits, picks up the calls you can’t and writes each DM up as a booking for you to approve.
